AFB director's close relatives attacked in Balochistan

Three brothers, a nephew and a cousin of a director of the American Friends of Balochistan miraculously survived a murderous hail of bullets in Qila Abdullah on Quetta-Chaman Road, near Jangal Camp, Friday while they were traveling from Pishin to their home town Kullaza in Qilla Abdullah.

The attackers were said to be a sons and grandsons of a deceased bad hat Shah Wali Piralizai and are protected by local political big wig Majeed Khan Achakzai,, who is a member of the provincial assembly, officials of the District administration, and the paramilitary Frontier Corps. Achakzai is a cousin of famous Pashtun nationalist leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai, chairman of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PMAP), but his bad handling of local politics has cost the nationalist party a lot of dissensions.

The victims were AFB research director Najeeb Khan’s two elder brothers Zafar Ullah, age 38, who is Senior Science Teacher at the Department of Education, Balochistan, Kaleem Ullah, age 36 who is Assistant Professor at Habibzai Intermediate College Qila Abdullah, and a younger brother Fareedullah, 19, who is a health worker with World Health Organization. The four door pick up was being driven by Najeeb Khan's cousin Najbuddin, age 35 along with Junaid Khan, 6, son of Kaleem Ullah were in the four door pick up going from Pishin to Qilla Abdullah when a white-color Toyota Vitz showed them the blinker to stop at Quetta-Chaman Road, near Jangal Camp.

Najbuddin, who was in the driving seat, sensing trouble, did not stop the pickup and tried to speed away by putting his foot on the gas but the assailants followed in their car and fired a volley of bullets that broke the rear window of the pick-up. A bullet pierced through the left ear oand another bullet wounded the left arm of Najbuddin.

As the pickup was loaded with stuffs the occupants were saved. The victims first lodged a complaint with Muhammad Qaisar Khan Nasar, deputy commissioner Killa Abdullah, about the incident. He sent the Assistant Commissioner to inspect the place and the damaged vehicle. The culprits have been identified, but the district administration has refused to arrest them as they are close to politician Achakzai.

Najeeb Khan, who is now doing his PhD in economic forecasting, was quite vocal against on the soldiers’ policy of enforced disappearance and kill and dump policy in France-sized Balochistan and had himself survived an assassination attempt four years back in Pakistan.

“I have not done anything wrong,” Najeeb Khan told his AFB colleagues. “All I have done is expose the extrajudicial killings and human rights violations in Balochistan. This I will continue to do so regardless of the threats and intimidation.”

Najeeb Khan's father was already forced to disown him publicly by putting an advertisement in black and white in a newspaper but the intelligence sleuths continue to pester the AFB director's family.

Two months ago the ISI summoned Najeeb Khan’s brother Kaleem Ullah to the Quetta cantonment and questioned him an entire day about the American Friends of Balochistan president and main leaders.

Just two weeks ago the plainclothesmen also visited the shop of Najeeb Khan’s father-in-law Tokyo Color Lab at circular Road Quetta, to question and blackmail the Quetta businessman Hassan Agha.
